Wind, rain, cold morning air, parties every other night, central heating, overindulging on chocolate and cocktails – the winter can be very bad news for good skin. From harsh weather which leaves skin chapped and dry, to Christmas treats and festivities which can leave skin greasy and all worn out – there’s a whole host of potential pitfalls for perfect skin this season. But don’t panic just yet. These five tips will help you get flawless skin throughout the festive period…
1. Change your Cleaner
You may be donning more make up for party season at the moment, but harsh cleansers and make up removers do a very good job of stripping skin of its natural oils – the kind that help it stand up to cold winds and harsh weather. Swap to a cream cleanser, or a natural option like rose water to ensure your skin stays clean but also nourished.
2. Bulk up your moisturiser
Light moisturisers may keep your skin fresh and soft in warmer months, but in wintry weather you need something more heavy duty. Beat cold weather and indoor heating by investing in a richer moisturiser for extra nourishment.
3. Keep up your water intake
It may be the season of mulled wine and Bailey’s hot chocolate, but all that extra booze and indulgent food mean it’s even more important to keep your body clean, clear and free of nasty toxins which can cause blemishes and dry skin. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and healthy.
4. Embrace Omega 3
Essential for boosting collagen levels and for keeping skin healthy and hydrated, make sure you’re getting plenty of Omega 3 in your diet through foods like oily fish, walnuts, chia seeds and flax seeds – or by taking a specific supplement.
5. Limit hot baths and showers
There may be nothing nicer than a long hot shower or bath on a cold day, but hot, extended washes are a recipe for dry skin. Limit your soaks and turn the temperature down a few notches to prevent dryness and flakiness this winter.
