As we all know, you can’t stop time and ageing is something which happens to us all. Eventually the signs of ageing set in but they can be slowed in order to help keep a healthy, more youthful appearance. Through technological breakthroughs and advances in skin treatment and non-surgical procedures you can now temporarily halt the ageing process through Dermal Fillers and anti-wrinkle injections, more commonly known as Botox.

There has been a lot of misinformation over the years regarding Botox and Dermal Fillers, with people considering the treatment but not knowing which to choose, whether it’s safe and whether the results will look natural. We answer these questions below and take a look at how the treatment works.

So What’s the Difference?

Botox is effectively the trade name for the substance used to treat and prevent wrinkles in the face. Botox temporarily relaxes the muscles in the face by blocking nerve impulses. This in turn, prevents wrinkles from forming, giving a younger, smoother look to the skin. Dermal Fillers is a substance injected into the face which helps bind water in the skin, working with any Collagen and Elastin in the body and helps these proteins to work more efficiently. As we age, we stop producing Collagen and Elastin and so this can create a problem with loose skin and eventually wrinkles.

Dermal Fillers directly soften wrinkles whereas Botox blocks the nerves in the muscles to stop motion causing wrinkles.

Considerations

Dermal Fillers and Botox are a great way to improve your appearance and to create a more youthful look. However, it’s important to know what it involves and any possible side effects that could occur. As with any cosmetic dentistry treatment or procedure, there can be side effects and this is the case with Botox and Dermal Fillers.

The following side effects may occur:

  • Rashes
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Dry Mouth
  • Tiredness
  • Mild headaches
  • Allergic reactions

These are just some of the side effects associated with these treatments. Each patient may experience variations of these due to lifestyle age and medical history and there are no guarantees with regards results or post-treatment side effects. Please speak with the specialist for more information when you have your consultation.

The Process

The treatment process is fairly simple and doesn’t take very long to complete, depending on the amount of work you have done. Usually, the surgeon will evaluate your facial appearance and the areas of your face to be worked on in order to identify strategic points.

Injection sites will be cleaned and an anaesthetic will be used to numb the skin. The filler injection will then be performed over the chosen sites on the face. Overall there generally isn’t much pain involved due to the anaesthetic and because of the quick nature of the treatment it could be completed within an hour.

Ice packs may be given to you to alleviate any discomfort following the treatment as you may find slight soreness or bruising occur but this should subside within 24 hours.

FAQs

Does Botox treatment hurt?

Generally, no it shouldn’t hurt. There is some discomfort because of the injections but these are minimal thanks to the anaesthetic. Any pain should be minimal and we expect any uncomfortable sensations should alleviate within 24 hours.

How long does the treatment take?

Depending on how much work you have done, it can be quite a quick process. The specialist will discuss your treatment with you and how many sessions you will need but the injection process can be as short as 15 minutes each time.

How many injections can I expect?

This will depend on how much work you plan on having. Normally, it is based on one injection per site.

How much does it cost?

Botox and Dermal Fillers are an affordable way to help reduce wrinkles and frown lines without invasive techniques or surgery. You will be paying for the filler or Botox substance as well as the expertise of the trained specialist. Our specialist is trained and licensed to perform this treatment and will guide you through all of the elements so you can make an informed decision. Cost can vary depending on what you have done and how much. Contact us today for more information on our dermal filler and Botox treatments.

How long before I see results?

Results are expected within 24 hours but in some cases you can see the change after you leave the appointment. Usually, results last between 4-6 months but we are unable to guarantee a set time frame and recommend regular treatment to maintain the results.

Is it permanent?

These treatments are not permanent and eventually the youthful look will diminish without regular treatments. Neither Botox nor Dermal Fillers are surgical procedures and so they are primarily an ongoing process in order to maintain the look that you want. We recommend visiting every 6 months but this will depend on age, health and the type of treatment that you choose.

Does the treatment look natural, or will it look like I’ve had work done?

The treatment will look natural but there will always be a limit of course. Should you have multiple treatments every year it’s possible that with age some of the changes may contrast and be visible but because of the temporary nature of fillers and Botox, they are dramatically less likely to be noticeable, when compared to surgical facelifts, for example.
